Contemplating the Book: My Life in Writing

I keep working on so many writing projects that mostly will never see fruition, spreading myself so thin in order to avoid imposter syndrome and the inevitable focus on what I see as failures. My whole life has been one long struggle to communicate coupled with an obsessive need to document my struggle through different writing forms and ideas. Lately, I have been contemplating the book while finishing up a few articles.  I am writing this post to keep myself honest and focused. My ultimate goal is to put together the proposal and the introduction before the end of summer. I want to conclude the two projects I am working on, but I have to wait for the inevitable comments. I published one book chapter this year, but another was canceled. I am waiting for additional feedback on two journal articles. I was hoping I could meet my other writing goals by summer, so I can focus most of my time on researching the book and beginning to finally draft it.  Today I am dealing with carpal ...

On the Weight of Vinyl: A Life of Moving Heavy Records

I have been moving into our new house for what seems like days. First, we had to paint each room and remove the carpet, and then we have slowly been moving our stuff over the past week. Whenever I move, I think about getting rid of some of my records or books because of the effort of moving them. Of course, this never happens, and I find myself moving more each time, constantly swearing and cursing at myself for my collection.  I generally move them by myself so that no one else will have to suffer. These deep bruises will turn yellow and take weeks to heal. When I move books in town, I have switched to smaller boxes and more trips to make it easier, but I have not found a better way to move vinyl. I started using large milk crates, but they beat my arms up as much and took more time. I ended up set...

Life in the Stacks, or Why I Love Working at the Library.

Image
I missed working at the library for the last several years, so I plan on working here more this semester. I am still waiting to get my office on campus, so I am sequestered in the library, importing my classes into Canvas and revising my syllabi. Hopefully, I will be doing most of this in my office in the future because I am excited about doing research at the library again. The library is always quiet, and I love hunkering down between books, and working. The musty smell of the books, old wooden tables, brick walls, are like home to me. I have been working in school libraries for years, and I never get sick of it. However, sometimes I get too comfortable and dose off between the stacks.
